| Local candidates win General Election / Primaries
|
 |
The August 3 General Election produced a huge turnout in Rhea County for a non-Presidential year. Thousands of citizens braved the sweltering heat to cast their ballots, some waiting for more than an hour in lines that stretched outside the polling places. The Rhea County Republican Party was well represented in the election by candidates for office at every level.
As a testament to her hard work and efficient management of the Register of Deeds office, Gladys Best was once again re-elected. She won a decisive victory against a very qualified opponent.
Several Republican candidates failed to upset the incumbents they were running against. In perhaps the toughest race of all, Robert Dillard faced sitting Sheriff Mike Neal. Dennis Akin ran a good race but could not unseat the current Circuit Court Clerk. Linda Hinds could not overcome Neva Webb for the County Trustee's office. We would like to thank each of these candidates for their hard work on behalf of the party and the citizens of Rhea County.
The House of Representatives District 31 seat vacated by Bo Watson produced some of the strongest competition of the year. Ultimately, Rhea County's own Jim Cobb outdistanced four fine candidates from Hamilton County. Let's all come together to support Jim in the very important upcoming November election.
On the national level, incumbent Republican Zach Wamp scored a major victory in his primary.
Chattanooga's former mayor Bob Corker overcame two tough opponents, including favorite son Van Hilleary, to claim the GOP nomination for Speaker Frist's Senate seat.
State Senator Jim Bryson earned the right to face Governor Bredeson in the November race for the highest office in Tennessee.
Please check out our Candidates page for information on how you can assist the primary winners with the upcoming election.
